Rubber Flooring FAQs
What is rubber flooring made of?
There are two types of rubber flooring – natural and recycled rubber. Natural rubber (a.k.a. virgin rubber) comes from rubber trees. The tree sap from rubber trees is rubber latex. In high-traffic environments, this natural rubber flooring may not work for all people, as those with latex allergies could find it irritating. Recycled rubber flooring often comes from recycled car and commercial truck tires. These tires are usually made with a combination of natural and recycled rubber, like styrene-butadiene (SBR). SBR is a polymeride made from petroleum and is one of the most popular alternatives to natural rubber on the market, and is 100% latex-free. It’s also one of the best eco-friendly flooring options.
Is rubber flooring eco-friendly?
Yes, rubber is eco-friendly! Instead of those used automotive tires being sent to a landfill, they are transformed into beautiful, sustainable flooring.
Is rubber flooring safe?
Yes, rubber flooring materials are safe, primarily when they are regulated and made by U.S manufacturers. By choosing American-made rubber products, you know that your product has gone through intense regulatory testing. When purchasing in the U.S., you also can reduce your carbon footprint and emissions associated with transportation. The U.S. EPA, Recycled Rubber Safety Council, Tire Industry Association, and Synthetic Turf Council have released statements that there is no link between rubber crumbs or rubber infills to health hazards, such as VOCs. In the past, synthetic rubber flooring posed mercury emission concerns. Today, modern rubber flooring is deemed safe to use.
What is rubber flooring used for?
Rubber is often used as fitness flooring for home gyms, commercial gyms, office spaces, educational institutions, playgrounds, business entrances, and flooring for horse stalls. Where longevity, slip resistance, and resilience are top priorities, you’ve found the right flooring.
Is rubber flooring waterproof?
No, but rubber flooring is highly water-resistant! For our vulcanized rubber products, which are non-porous, no sealer is needed. If you would like, you can add the water-tight Seam Sealer in between interlocking tiles as a preventative step. Although our urethane rubber products are resilient and ultra-durable, they are semi-porous. To combat this, we recommend using our Rubber Floor Finish and Sealer and Seam Sealer glue around the edges to keep water from penetrating the subfloor.
How do you clean rubber flooring?
One of the many perks of rubber flooring is how easy it is to clean. First, start by vacuuming the area for debris, dust, and crumbs. You’ll want a fresh surface to work with when you lightly mop. Starting with warm water, mop with a synthetic mophead and let your rubber flooring air dry in a well-ventilated space. For rubber flooring products, we recommend the fast-acting Rubber Floor Cleaner and Degreaser. It’s essential to avoid solvent-based, acidic, or oil-based solutions, as this can damage your rubber flooring down the road.
How long can rubber flooring last?
Proper rubber maintenance and care are essential. Most people can keep their rubber flooring for over 20 years. For best long-term results, you’ll want to avoid objects that tear or gouge the floor, as well as harsh chemicals for maintenance.
Do you need underlayment for rubber flooring?
Rubber flooring does not require underlayment unless you have an unlevel subfloor. If you are looking for increased sound and shock absorption, there are various underlayments such as foam, cork, and rubber.

Pros and Cons of Rubber Flooring
What are the advantages of rubber flooring?
- Low-maintenance: Rubber flooring is easy to wipe off dirt, crumbs, and spills. To a large extent, it’s slip, moisture, and heat resistant.
- Hypoallergenic: Rubber is excellent for anyone concerned about germs, dust mites, and allergens (except latex allergies).
- Installation: Installing rubber tiles, mats, and rolls is relatively easy to do for DIYers. For larger floor installations, it may be useful to have a friend or flooring installer help you.
- Highly durable: Rubber can take a large number of hits and look as good as new! With endless color variations and styles to choose from, you’ll have no problem finding your favorite that can withstand heavy loads and drops.
What are the drawbacks of rubber flooring?
- Initial smell: With proper ventilation in an open space, you can get rid of this smell fast. If you want, you can also mop it a few times with soap and water after installing. It can sometimes take about a month for the tire smell to go away.
- Color fading: Rubber is prone to fading and looking dull over time. To keep the shine of high-colored rubber, we recommend using ourRubber Floor Finish and Sealer.

Rubber Flooring Tiles vs. Rolls

So what’s the bottom line? It’s all personal preference and how you are planning on using your space.
- Price: In general, rubber rolls tend to be a less expensive option than rubber tiles.
- Dimensions: Rubber rolls cover more space and require less cutting during installation. This makes rolls the ample choice for large commercial areas.
- Ease of installation: Rubber flooring can be a heavy and challenging task to complete as a DIY project. For smaller spaces, we recommend rubber flooring tiles, as they can transform a room in just a couple of hours, thanks to the interlocking construction. No need for adhesives or glue!

With many pros and cons of each flooring option, the first thing you should do is consider if your next gym flooring project is for residential or commercial use. The quality of materials and your allotted budget will guide you to the right rubber flooring.
- Appearance: With rubber flooring, you'll get a high-quality material that will look great and hold its shape in a high-impact gym setting.

Jamboree Playground Tiles
We decided to put rubber flooring tiles down under our new playground to ensure the safety of all the children that I care for. There were many companies to choose from, but none could compare to the customer service of IncStores! My material was delivered quite quickly, and my contact person was in touch with me every step of the way! It was rather easy to install, and the video was very useful! The children enjoy riding their trikes on the mat, and I feel safe, knowing they are protected!
3/4 inch Extreme Mats
Got these mats to outfit the fitness area of our new ninja warrior gym. Super easy install, the mats all lined up very nicely with little trimming required. They clean up super easy too, which is a plus!
