FAQs

How do you install carpet?

Carpet can be installed two main ways depending on the type. Broadloom rolls need to be anchored and stretched over the floor, and require accessories like padding and tacks. Carpet tiles or squares have a simpler installation. Some carpet tiles are actually peel and stick and made to be so easy, you just have to peel and place, while others can be placed and secured using double-sided flooring tape or adhesive for a permanent installation.

What padding should I select for my carpet?

Thicker, squishy padding is ideal for use in the home with broadloom carpet. This will give you that classic, comfortable feeling that we all have come to know and love. Busy families or people with pets should consider padding with a moisture barrier to prevent liquids from soaking in, which can cause mold and mildew. If you’re looking for extra comfort, consider memory foam padding. Finally, if sustainability is important to you, you can choose padding made from recycled materials. As a general rule of thumb, the better the quality of your padding, the longer your floor will last.

Can you install carpet over radiant heating?

Carpets work like insulation, so it can be difficult for radiant heating to be effective underneath it. However, it’s not impossible to have this kind of flooring over radiant heating. Be sure to check the manufacturer specifications of your chosen carpet, pad, and heating system for compatibility before purchasing the items.

How do you clean carpet?

The first step to keeping carpet clean is to regularly vacuum up any dirt or dust. If you accidentally spill something, soak it up immediately with a clean cloth, and address stains with a household carpet cleaning product. For a very deep clean, you can typically hire a carpet cleaning service, or rent a cleaning machine yourself. Always check the manufacturer’s cleaning guidelines to follow their instructions.

Is carpet eco-friendly?

Many carpet options these days are eco-friendly, because they are made from recycled materials, including plastic bottles and even fishing nets. Some carpets are also made of natural, renewable fibers, like plant fibers or wool. Sustainable carpet is perfect for people who want stylish flooring while also being environmentally conscious. Several manufacturers also offer carpet recycling programs for old carpets in homes or businesses. These old carpets can be recycled and turned into new products.

What is carpet face weight?

Face weight measures how much one square yard of carpet weighs, in ounces. This measurement only weighs the fibers themselves, and not the backing. A higher face weight doesn’t necessarily mean a more durable carpet, because you need to take other factors into account, including the type of fiber and the density of the fibers. However, if you have a high face weight, a high density, and a durable fiber, you probably have a durable floor.

What is the best carpet option?

The highest quality carpet is typically made of nylon fiber, which is the most durable material for indoor use. The fiber should also be coated with a stain protector to keep it looking great. For a budgeted installation, PET carpets typically have a lower price tag and are eco-friendly.

Carpet Floor Pros and Cons

What are the advantages?

  • Comfort: Nothing can make a room comfy and cozy like carpet rolls. In addition to the options for plush fibers and added padding, it offers more warmth than tile or vinyl.
  • Style: So many patterns, designs, and colors can be applied to carpet rolls and tiles. That means you can find a product in whatever style you prefer.
  • Eco-friendly: Many carpet tiles are now manufactured sustainably out of materials like plastic bottles and fishing nets.
  • Carpet tile installation: Installing tiles is incredibly easy. For many tiles, you simply have to peel off the backing to reveal pre-applied adhesive, then stick the tile to the floor.

What are the drawbacks?

  • Maintenance: While some carpets come with stain protection, there’s still the potential for an accidental spill to leave an unsightly spot on your floor.
  • Broadloom installation: Rolled carpet can be harder to install than tiles, because they need to be stretched out and fastened down. Professional installation is recommended.

Types

Tiles/Planks

Carpet tiles are one of our most popular flooring solution products. They are available in many styles and colors and are typically easier to install and maintain when compared to other flooring types such as broadloom. There’s also a new variation of a tile - a plank! You get all the benefits, but in a fun new plank shape, so you have more design opportunities.

Installing peel and stick tiles takes two steps: peel, then stick! Some tiles require double sided tape, but that only adds one more step. Easy peasy - no professional installation is needed!

An added bonus to choosing a tile over broadloom is that they are easy to replace. If one were to become damaged, you can easily pull it up and replace it.

Rolls/Broadloom

While carpet tiles are a quickly growing flooring option, traditional broadloom still takes the cake for the majority of the flooring industry. Do you know the concept of “buy more, save more”? Broadloom rolls follow that same idea, and rolls are typically priced cheaper per square foot than other floor types since they will cover a larger area.

This makes broadloom a great choice for budget-friendly projects as well as large jobs where a high amount of square footage needs to be covered. We shouldn’t forget to mention how comfortable the traditional carpeting is underfoot - these thicker and often plush rolls can be the perfect relaxation for your tired feet.

Rugs

An area rug combines the easy installation of carpet tiles with the comfort of broadloom rolls. They come in a variety of beautiful colors, designs, and textures, making them the perfect accent piece for your room.

Area rugs add to the functionality of your space. If you love the easy maintenance of tile, but still want to avoid constantly cold floors, an area rug designates a warm, comfortable hangout spot that doesn’t require the cleaning effort of wall-to-wall carpet. Plus, some rugs are designed for outdoor use, so you can spruce up your porch or patio. Just lay out your rug and enjoy!

Carpet Floor Applications

High Traffic/Commercial

Commercial settings like stores, lobbies, and business obviously have a ton of foot traffic. If you want to cover the floor in a heavy traffic area, you need something that won’t get matted down or worn-looking after only a few months of use.

That’s where high traffic carpet comes in! This is a low-pile, durable option that won’t stain easily. Many businesses will use commercial carpet tiles, because if one gets stained or destroyed, it’s easy to pull it up and replace it without having to spend the time and money on replacing the entire floor.

Low Traffic/Residential

As the name might suggest, residential carpet is designed to excel in your home, where there’s not going to be really heavy foot traffic. While still durable, low traffic flooring can focus more on being comfortable or budget friendly, and not just indestructible.

With low traffic carpet, you’ll often find thicker pile heights, which means a plush floor. Some options come with other features to make home life easier, including stain resistance, hypoallergenic construction, and even waterproof technology.

Outdoor

Outdoor carpet is built to withstand the elements while still remaining visually appealing and hygienic. For those reasons, this kind of flooring needs to be UV stable, as well as resistant to mold, mildew, stains, and moisture.

For outdoor patios and deck areas, we recommend choosing a polyester fiber carpet. Polyester is durable enough to stand up to all of the harsh things that weather may have in store, and will not fade in direct sunlight.

Fiber Types

Nylon

This is the most common as well as versatile fiber in the world of carpet. It’s ideal for indoor installations, and is a popular choice inside commercial buildings, condos and apartments. Nylon is often chosen for its safety with indoor applications because it meets fire codes since it doesn’t burn - it melts.

Additionally, nylon is resistant to mold, mildew and staining, and is also less absorbent than other fibers. However, if you’re looking for outdoor carpet, you should look at other fibers. This is because nylon fades very easily in the sun, so it’s not designed for outdoor applications.

Polyester

Polyester or “PET” is quite durable and is typically a lower cost than nylon. This thread has started to become the standard fiber used in many carpets and is used in both indoor and outdoor applications. This fiber is very durable and resistant to water as well as staining, which makes it great for any use in the home and even in commercial spaces.

Another added benefit of this fiber is it’s high color retention and consistency. What this means for you is that when you have several solid-colored tiles of the same color next to each other, they will all look the same. There won’t be noticeable color variation. This can’t be said for other fibers.

Polypropylene

These fibers are cheaper than others, but they still hold up very well in high traffic areas. You can find polypropylene fiber in places like grocery stores or office lobbies. This kind of fiber is easily stained, especially by oil, but it does offer benefits in the form of fade- and mildew-resistance.

Hobnail Carpet Tile

The carpet tiles arrived quickly and were packaged well without any bad pieces. The carpet was easy to install and stuck to the floor very well. I placed the carpet tiles over travertine floor tiles. Installation of my 300 sq.ft. theater room only took an afternoon and that is including all the trim pieces. I highly recommend these tiles.
