Vinyl Flooring FAQs

You asked – we answered! Below are the most common questions we get asked about vinyl flooring.

What is vinyl made of?

Vinyl is made of the synthetic material polyvinyl chloride (PVC). In most vinyl flooring, you can also find fiberglass and plasticizers. These synthetic materials work to create a multi-layered flooring that can withstand everyday wear and tear effectively and keep your space looking great for years to come.

What are the benefits of vinyl flooring?

Vinyl flooring has many advantages, starting with a wide range of affordable tile, plank, and sheet options. With advanced technology, most vinyl flooring is ultra-durable and either highly water-resistant or 100% waterproof. Both of these features make vinyl floors an excellent choice for busy homeowners and those with kids and pets.

Is vinyl flooring pet-friendly?

In general, most vinyl flooring is pet-friendly. We have various FloorScore certified vinyl flooring that will keep you and your loved ones safe indoors. Our pet-friendly vinyl options are stain- and scratch-resistant, making them the perfect choice for those with young pets.

How long will vinyl flooring last?

There is no set guideline as to how long vinyl floors will last. A good rule of thumb is the thicker the wear layer, the more resilient your vinyl floors. Factors like foot traffic and application can significantly impact the longevity of your vinyl floors. The great news is that most of our vinyl flooring comes with extended warranties and can last anywhere from 5 to 25 years with proper installation, care, and maintenance. Check with the manufacturer for individual product specifications.

Do you need an underlayment with vinyl flooring?

Some vinyl flooring will come with an underlayment attached. If your product does not come with an attached underlayment, we recommend purchasing one. Underlayment has sound-dampening properties, protects your subfloor, and makes it more comfortable underfoot. Cork and foam are popular underlayment choices for vinyl flooring, but rubber may cause staining to the subfloor.

How durable are vinyl floors?

Vinyl flooring is highly durable. When purchasing vinyl flooring, remember that the thicker the wear layer, the more durable the product will be. The wear layer protects the flooring from scratches, but hardly any flooring is truly 100% scratchproof. Factors like pets, lifestyle, and foot traffic may impact scratches on vinyl flooring over time.

How do you clean vinyl floors?

Cleaning vinyl flooring is easy. Start by sweeping away any dust, food, or dirt particles. Next, with a wringed-out mop, remove any leftover stains and harsher substances. We do not recommend drenching your vinyl flooring in water, using a steam mop, or using harsh cleaners.

How do you install vinyl flooring?

You can install vinyl floors in several ways. We offer several DIY-friendly installation options such as interlocking, peel and stick, glue-free, and loose-lay. However, for permanent installations for commercial applications, we recommend the glue-down method for your vinyl flooring.

Is vinyl flooring better than laminate?

Vinyl flooring looks similar to laminate, but the big difference is in the construction and features. Vinyl flooring is more water-resistant than laminate, and therefore a better choice for a kitchen, bathroom, or basement floor. Laminate, however, is typically less expensive than vinyl. Both floors are durable and come in several looks, colors, and thicknesses.

Vinyl Flooring Overview

As technology advances, vinyl flooring can mimic natural wood and stone looks better than ever before. With minimal maintenance, waterproofing, and a resilient surface, vinyl has become one of the leading flooring choices on the market. Popular places people place vinyl are in entryways, playrooms, bedrooms, kitchens, basements, and more.

Luxury Vinyl Flooring Pros and Cons

Benefits of Vinyl Flooring

  • Gorgeous wood and stone looks: Our luxury vinyl planks and tile feature ultra-realistic visuals to suit any room. You’ll have a hard time telling if it’s artificial or not.
  • Waterproof options: Many vinyl floors come with waterproof capabilities, making them the perfect choice for kitchens, bathrooms, or anywhere you have moisture challenges.

  • DIY installation options: DIYers, this floor is for you. Several vinyl flooring come with peel-and-stick or click-lock installation to make your project easier.

Disadvantages of Vinyl Flooring

  • Difficult to remove: If you choose a more permanent solution, removal will be more challenging to do. It’s best to consider how long you’ll have vinyl floors in one area and the potential foot traffic beforehand.
  • Not as eco-friendly: Most vinyl floors are manufactured with safer VOC-free materials and can be repurposed later on. However, it’s best to check the individual product specifications for details.
  • Harder to repair: Depending on the vinyl flooring type you choose, it may be harder to repair individual damage spots.

Types of Vinyl Flooring

There are three types of vinyl flooring. All of them have benefits and considerations depending on your placement and desired aesthetic. Explore the possibilities below.

Vinyl Plank Flooring

Vinyl plank flooring, also known as LVP, can offer an inviting and warm feel to any space. With realistic wood grains and textures like hand-scraped and wire-brushed, you’ll find the perfect look to match your aesthetic.

Luxury Vinyl Tile Flooring

Achieve beautiful natural stone-look flooring with luxury vinyl tile (LVT). You’ll find a variety of porcelain and ceramic looks, with all the benefits of traditional vinyl material. Compared to natural stone tile, this flooring is a more budget-friendly alternative.

Sheet Vinyl Flooring

Homeowners and business owners often use sheet vinyl to cover large spaces. Sheet vinyl tends to be a more affordable option than vinyl planks and tiles when covering more square footage. For commercial projects, vinyl sheets are a leading choice since they’re budget-friendly and easier to install.

Applications for Every Space

You can install vinyl in several areas of your home and business –from the kitchen to the basement, garage, and even on walls. For increased protection and longevity, you can find commercial-grade vinyl that can withstand the most hectic of environments.

Residential Vinyl Flooring

Luxury vinyl planks and tiles are often used in residential areas. Homeowners of all lifestyles can benefit from having these durable, beautiful, and affordable floors. In terms of real estate, vinyl flooring is a popular choice when flipping houses.

Commercial Vinyl Flooring

Commercial vinyl is made to withstand heavy foot traffic and is more scratch- and dent-resistant than residential alternatives. Temperamental spaces like commercial kitchens, restaurants, and grocery stores are places you can find vinyl flooring without worrying about water damage.

Vinyl Flooring for Walls

You can use vinyl floor material for more than just floors. Apply vinyl to your walls for a fun, rustic addition to your living room, kitchen, bedroom, or more.

Vinyl Flooring Features

Not all vinyl floors are created equal. Some vinyl floors come with added benefits, like waterproofing and attached underlay, that can make your life easier.

Waterproof Vinyl Flooring

If you plan on installing your vinyl flooring in a moisture-prone environment, we recommend going with a 100% waterproof option. Challenging locations like kitchens, laundry rooms, bathrooms, and basements are no longer an issue with 100% waterproof vinyl. Your floors will remain beautiful, dry, and without any damage to the subfloor.

Vinyl Flooring with Attached Underlay

A perk of our vinyl floors is that many come with an attached underlay. Underlayment is an essential part of installing a vinyl floor, as it helps provide comfort underfoot, sound absorption, and insulation. For minor subfloor irregularities, vinyl flooring with attached underlay may be enough to provide a more even surface feel and look. Consult with a professional for individual installation needs.

Love supporting US manufacturers? We have various vinyl tiles, planks, and rolls made and shipped here in the USA.

ADA-Compliant Vinyl Flooring

Having ADA-compliant flooring is essential for wheelchair accessibility. We offer ADA-compliant vinyl planks that are antimicrobial and great for residential and commercial use.

Have concerns about bacteria? Our anti-microbial vinyl flooring prevents bacteria from growing at the plank surface. Anywhere you want a safe surface for children and animals to play with, our anti-microbial vinyl floor options are a trusted option.

Trending Vinyl Flooring Colors

Gray Vinyl Flooring

Neutral gray vinyl flooring is a fantastic choice for those who love a low-profile aesthetic. Many contemporary homes feature the gray color within vinyl stone tiles and planks. Gray flooring also provides a neutral backdrop for colorful furniture, decorations, and appliances. You won’t have to worry about clashing tones.

High Variation Vinyl Flooring

High variation vinyl flooring can give you a bold, multi-dimensional wood look. If you want a natural, rustic look, high-variance vinyl plank flooring provides all the inconsistencies of genuine wood to do just that.

Dark Wood Vinyl Flooring

Deep, rich-colored vinyl flooring is a classy way to upgrade your home’s appearance. It’s a popular choice for living rooms and large spaces. In addition, modern farmhouse interiors often use dark wood flooring to offset stark white walls for a bold statement.

Whitewashed Vinyl Flooring

Whitewashed vinyl is one of the hottest colors to choose from. It compliments a wide range of aesthetics, most popularly used in farmhouse-style kitchens and West Coast-themed interiors. You can achieve a crisp, cool, and relaxed environment with this lighter flooring color.

Vinyl vs. Laminate Flooring: What’s the Difference?

How does vinyl flooring compare to laminate? While both are durable and affordable wood-look floors, the two are built differently and contain different features.

  • Application:  Vinyl flooring can go anywhere, including bathrooms, kitchens, and basements. However, we do not recommend all laminates for moisture-prone areas.
  • Moisture resistance: Vinyl material is 100% waterproof from bottom to top, whereas laminate is water-resistant from top to bottom and can still be damaged if sitting in water for a long time.
  • DIY-friendly: Both vinyl and laminate are DIY-friendly. However, for the glue-down method, we recommend a professional installer for both vinyl and laminate.
  • Resilient: Overall, vinyl and laminate are both resilient floor options. By purchasing vinyl flooring with a thicker wear layer, you can better mitigate the scrapes and scratches that often appear with everyday wear and tear. Laminate is an equally great choice but can be damaged a bit easier if it is not waterproof.

Vinyl vs. Linoleum Flooring: Which is Better?

Wait, linoleum and vinyl aren’t the same? While the styles of the old days may have looked similar, today’s vinyl products look far different from the old-school linoleum. But looks aren’t everything – these two floors are constructed differently and will perform differently.

  • Application:  Vinyl comes with more style and color options and will not fade over time, unlike linoleum.
  • Use: Linoleum is not recommended for moisture-prone areas, whereas many options in vinyl flooring are 100% waterproof, making it an excellent floor for any room of the house.
  • Maintenance: Vinyl flooring is low maintenance, requiring no more than a basic cleaning. On the other hand, linoleum flooring needs additional polishing to keep floors looking fresh.
  • Comfort: Both linoleum and vinyl flooring offer a comfortable surface for joints, compared to a hard floor surface, like tile. Also, both options feature insulating and sound absorbent properties.

Vinyl Flooring Reviews

TritonCORE Pro 7 inch Rigid Core Vinyl Planks

We recently purchased a new house that needed new flooring. We looked at many different products and decided to try TritonCORE Pro in Plymouth Hickory. The floors looks INCREDIBLE!!! We get so many compliments from visitors on our new floors and everyone asks where we got them. Many people don't even know that it isn't real hardwood. I would 10/10 recommend this flooring to anyone interested. It made our home look like a completely different house. We paid professional installers to install the floors right over the top of the old tile to save us money and it looks fantastic. I can't say enough good things about this flooring and the customer service. You will not be disappointed! THANK YOU FlooringInc.
