Choosing Rubber Flooring for a Hotel Fitness Room

A hotel gym needs a floor that carries cardio machines, stays quiet for guests nearby, and goes down without a long closure.

Key takeaways

  • Our Quick Ship guide names 8mm Pre-Cut rolls for hotel fitness rooms
  • Thicker, denser rubber absorbs more impact sound
  • For upper floors, look at impact rolls, shock mats or an acoustic underlayment
  • Plan the relax time of the rolls as well as the install window

What a hotel fitness room needs

A hotel fitness room can be small, and guests sleep in rooms near it. The floor must carry cardio equipment and control impact noise. Rubber absorbs the vibration from footsteps, dropped objects and gym equipment, so it is a good choice for impact noise. Our sound guide says carpet and foam do not control impact noise as well as rubber in heavy-use areas.

Options for a hotel gym

Our Quick Ship guide gives an example of a hotel fitness room of 200 to 600 square feet. It uses 4′ x 25′ rolls of 8mm Pre-Cut Strong rubber. The guide says this rubber is dense enough for cardio equipment and quiet enough for guests in adjacent rooms.

OptionWhat our pages say
8mm Pre-Cut Strong rollsNamed for hotel fitness rooms; dense enough for cardio equipment
15mm Impact Rolls - Designer SeriesExtra sound absorption; a customer favorite for second- and third-story gyms
3/4″ Shock MatsWaffle backing absorbs vibration and impact noise; listed for second-floor gym flooring
Impact Rolls - Wood SeriesA wood-look vinyl surface over a shock-absorbent rubber underlay

The Wood Series gives the look of hardwood. Our High Impact guide says it works in commercial gyms and even dance studios.

When guest rooms are close

Our guides give two starting points for noise. The Quick Ship guide says 8mm is quiet enough for guests in adjacent rooms. Our sound guide suggests 3/8″ or thicker where impact sound and vibration are a critical problem. Thicker, denser rubber absorbs more sound, and an acoustic underlayment can reduce noise further. Rubber also reduces some airborne noise, such as voices or music.

A short installation window

Our Quick Ship guide says an 8mm floor for a small hotel fitness room can go in during a single off-shift. The Rubber Gym Rolls installation steps also say to lay the rolls loose in the room first. They need 24 to 48 hours to relax before you cut them. Plan time for both steps.

  • Help: rubber rolls are heavy. Plan for at least two people.
  • Method: use double-sided tape around the perimeter of each roll if you want a floor you can remove later.
  • Color: order all rolls at the same time, because color can vary between separate orders.
  • Care: clean most high-impact floors with a simple solution of mild soap and water.
