Flooring Trends

Articles

Flooring styles shift with paint colors, cabinet finishes, and how people use a room these days. This series tracks what's showing up in new builds and remodels, room by room and material by material.

A Running Log of Flooring Trends

This topic collects our yearly trend roundups plus the room- and material-specific breakouts that come out of them. 2025 Flooring Trends is the widest lens, covering the shifts we're seeing across wood, tile, vinyl, and carpet in one place. If you're focused on a single room, 2025 Bathroom Flooring Trends and 2025 Kitchen Cabinet Trends narrow in on the pairings and layouts designers are specifying right now. 2025 Carpet Trends does the same for soft flooring, from texture choices to where wall-to-wall is making a comeback.

Older posts stay up on purpose. Comparing what we flagged a few years ago against this year's picks is a decent way to tell a passing fad from a look with staying power.

Reading Flooring Trends Without Overcorrecting

A trend post is a snapshot of what's popular, not a rule about what will hold up in your house. The most useful way to read this series: treat color and pattern calls as directional (warm tones, wider planks, more texture) rather than a specific SKU to chase, since finishes get replaced constantly while the underlying idea sticks around longer. Durability, room use, and budget should still drive the actual material decision. A trend can tell you that patterned tile is having a moment; it won't tell you whether it's the right call for a mudroom that floods every winter.

If a look catches your eye in one of these posts, it's worth cross-referencing against a room-specific guide before committing, since the same trend can play out very differently in a kitchen versus a bedroom.

Flooring Trends FAQs

How often do flooring trends actually change?

Meaningfully, about once every few years. Color palettes and finish details shift annually, but the bigger moves, like wide-plank wood or large-format tile becoming standard, tend to take hold gradually and stay relevant well past the year they were named a trend.

Are trendy flooring choices a bad long-term investment?

Not inherently. The risk is picking a very specific, loud pattern that's tied to one moment. Trends built around neutral undertones, plank width, or layout (like herringbone) tend to age better than trends built around a single bold color or motif.

Should kitchen and bathroom flooring follow the same trends as the rest of the house?

Not exactly. Those rooms deal with moisture and heavy foot traffic, so a trend has to clear a practicality bar first. That's why we cover kitchens and bathrooms in their own posts instead of folding them into the general roundup.

What's the difference between a flooring trend and a flooring style?

A trend is time-bound, tied to a particular year or design cycle. A style, like farmhouse or mid-century, is a broader aesthetic that trends move in and out of. A given year's trend post might spotlight three or four styles that happen to be resurging.
