Distribution Center Upgrade: Anti-Fatigue Flooring for Work Stations

Packing and assembly stations are where people stand all shift. Upgrade the floor there first, one zone at a time.

Key takeaways

  • Anti-fatigue mats reduce strain at packing and assembly stations
  • Rubber mats move with the layout, and you replace them one at a time
  • Use impermeable drainage mats where liquids or cold are present
  • Check each product page for rolling-load and forklift use
Upgrade the floor where people stand, not the whole building.

Start where people stand

Standing for hours on a hard surface can cause back and leg fatigue. Anti-fatigue rubber mats give gentle cushioning that helps comfort and productivity. Our rubber flooring guide names cashier stations, assembly lines and packing areas as good places for them. Mats also take the daily wear, which can extend the life of the floor under them.

Upgrade one zone at a time

  • Walk the floor, and mark each station where people stand for long periods.
  • Measure each station. Note any liquids, oil or cold in the area.
  • Start with one zone, and get feedback from the staff who work there.
  • Install during a shift change or a planned stop.
  • Move to the next zone when the first zone works well.

Interlocking tiles suit a phased plan. Diamond Flex tiles snap together with no adhesive or special tools, and you can use them immediately after installation. The product page also states that they reduce standing fatigue and muffle noise underfoot.

Care for the new floor

Rubber mats are easy to clean. Shake them out, hose them down or mop them, as the style allows. Vacuum or sweep the mats daily, so dirt does not get into the texture. Do not use harsh chemicals such as bleach or oil-based cleaners, because they can break down rubber over time. Check the mats often. When one mat wears out, replace only that mat.
