After-Hours Installations: Reduce Business Disruption With the Right Accessories

Install a new floor after closing time and open again on schedule. Choose methods with short cure times, and bring the right accessories.

Key takeaways

  • Pressure-sensitive adhesive can often take foot traffic immediately
  • Epoxy or urethane adhesives can take up to 48 hours to fully cure
  • Each epoxy coat needs about 16 hours; polyaspartic dries in an hour or less
  • Interlocking PVC tiles need no adhesive and are ready to use after installation
When the doors open in the morning, the floor must be ready.

Cure time sets the schedule

An after-hours job has a hard stop: the time the business opens. The installation method decides when people can walk on the new floor. Before you book the crew, compare the drying and cure times of each method.

MethodFoot trafficNotes
Pressure-sensitive adhesiveOften immediately after installationUsed with vinyl flooring and carpet tiles
Epoxy or urethane adhesiveUp to 48 hours to fully curePolyurethane adhesive installs rubber rolls and tiles
Epoxy floor coatingAbout 16 hours after each coatA full cure takes about a month
Polyaspartic floor coatingAn hour or less after the first coatCures within 30 minutes to an hour

⚠️ The most accurate drying times come from the manufacturer. Check the product instructions before you set the opening time.

Floors that need no glue

The 6.5mm Diamond Flex Tiles use a hidden interlock that snaps together with no glue. They install over any flat, structurally sound surface, and you can use them immediately. Their product page lists retail, healthcare, school and government buildings as uses. Carpet tiles can go down with a pressure-sensitive adhesive. This adhesive is releasable, so you can lift and replace one tile later.

Accessories to bring

  • Seam sealer: small beads of black polyurethane glue along a rubber roll seam, where a full-spread glue cannot go.
  • Transitions: T-molding joins two floors of the same height. A reducer joins floors of different heights.
  • Spacers: flooring spacers keep the correct expansion gap around a floating floor.
  • Tools: an adjustable T-square for straight cuts, a utility knife, a trowel and a rubber mallet.

Install transitions with construction glue under a heavy object, or nail them to the subfloor.

Plan the night shift

  • Check that the subfloor is flat, clean and sound before the night of the job.
  • Get the flooring and all accessories to the site before the crew arrives.
  • Start with the area that has the longest cure time.
  • Install trims and transitions last, as the finishing touch.
  • Open the area only after the cure time in the product instructions.
