Installation Instructions

Outdoor Installation

1. Surface Preparation:

  • Remove Existing Material: Clear all grasses, sods, mulches, and other materials from the installation area. If landscaping around obstacles, mark and account for turf edge configurations, leaving space around tree bases.
  • Cap Sprinklers: Cap any unused sprinklers at the pipe level to prevent leaks. Relocate and mark the location of unused sprinklers. Move electrical sprinklers and wiring inward by 6-8 inches to avoid damage during installation.

2. Base Construction:

  • Install Base: Use decomposed granite (DG) for drainage. Spread DG to a depth of 3 inches, level, and compact by vibrating, tamping, and rolling until flat. Allow it to settle properly.
  • Optional Turf Pad: If using a turf pad, cut a hole in the base to match the pad’s size and depth.
  • Roll Out Weed Cloth: To prevent weeds, lay weed cloth over the base, overlapping edges by 6 inches and securing with flat-head nails. Trim to fit with a 1/4” border. Avoid driving nails too deeply.

3. Lay Turf:

  • Align Turf: Use straight or perpendicular edges for alignment. Square the turf to minimize cutting and fitting. Secure edges with temporary nails.
  • Cut and Fit: Over-cut the turf by one inch along edges. This excess will be used for tucking.
  • Seam Turf: Use a seaming tool to cut turf in an S-shape to avoid discoloration. Install nails every 6 inches along the edge, driving them 3/4 of the way. Use U-nails every 6 inches for seams, ensuring they are level and hidden.
  • Tuck and Brush: Tuck edges with a wonder bar for a clean look. Brush against the grain to lift fibers. Apply and spread infill or sand evenly. Brush again to settle the infill and stabilize the turf. Remove excess debris.

Indoor Installation

1. Surface Preparation:

  • Clean and Level: Ensure the surface is level, clean, and dry. Suitable surfaces include concrete, dusting, powdering concrete, gypcrete, pressure-treated decking, wood, or backer board.
  • Dry Lay: Unroll the turf to check fit and alignment. Manufacturing details stamped on the backing will guide fiber direction.

2. Adhesive Application:

  • Apply Adhesive: Use adhesive or double-sided tape on the surface. If adding a turf pad, install it over the base with tape or glue.
  • Lay the Turf: Position the turf and apply a bead of seam sealer to all seams.
  • Roll: Use a 75 lb. weighted roller to press down the turf across its width and length.
  • Cure: Allow the installation to remain in dry conditions for 72 hours for proper adhesive curing.

  • Maintenance Instructions for Rolled Artificial Turf Flooring:

Maintaining your rolled artificial grass is essential to ensure its longevity and pristine appearance. Here are the steps to keep your turf looking its best:

    Regular Cleaning:

    • Periodically rake the turf with a plastic rake to remove leaves, twigs, and other debris. This helps to keep the surface clean and prevents the buildup of organic material that can encourage weed growth.
    • Avoid using metal rakes, as they can damage the turf fibers.

      Brushing:

      • Use a power brush or a heavy-bristled brush to brush the turf against the grain. This will help to keep the blades upright and maintain the natural look of the turf.
      • Brushing also helps to evenly distribute the infill and ensure proper support for the turf fibers.

        Stain Removal:

        • For spills or stains, clean the affected area promptly with a mild soap and water solution. Avoid using harsh chemicals that could damage the turf fibers.
        • For tougher stains, a mixture of vinegar and water can be used. Rinse the area thoroughly with water after cleaning.

        Weed Control:

        • Although weed cloth helps prevent weeds, occasional weeds may appear around the edges or seams. Remove any weeds by hand to prevent them from taking root.
        • If necessary, apply a water-based herbicide that is safe for synthetic turf to control weed growth.

          Pet Maintenance:

          • For areas used by pets, regularly remove solid waste and rinse the area with water to prevent odors.
          • Use a turf deodorizer if needed to keep the area smelling fresh.

            Infill Maintenance:

            • Check the infill levels periodically and add more if needed to ensure the blades remain upright and the turf retains its resilience.
            • Over time, infill can settle or be displaced, so it’s important to top it up as required.

By following these maintenance steps, your artificial turf will remain clean, attractive, and in excellent condition for years to come.

          Maintenance

          Additional Cleaning Tips:

          1. Stains and Blemishes:

          • Clean: Use a warm water solution with household detergent. Avoid bleach.

          2. Animal Urine:

          • Clean: Use a mixture of white distilled vinegar and water. Flush thoroughly and vacuum any excess solution.

          3. Chewing Gum:

          • Remove: Use dry ice or refrigerant packets to freeze and remove gum.

          4. Matted Turf:

          • Brush: Use a synthetic brush to lift matted fibers. Avoid metal or wire-bristled brushes.

We recommend placing our Newport Turf Rolls over a smooth surface, whether that be hilly or flat. Depending on how jagged the stones are, you could potentially install the turf over the stones. You can rake the turf, but with a plastic rake, not a metal one.

To cut our Newport Turf Rolls, all you would need is a sharp utility knife and a straight edge. When you come up to the area where you need to cut; measure where you need to make your cut and fold over the turf. You will then use the utility knife and cut the back of the turf. The edge will not fray like typical carpet. Since these fibers look like grass, you will still have the same look. To get a visual representation of how this is done, we do offer an installation video for our turf products...

You will then a cut to allow you to fold the excess over and cut the turf to fit your space with a sharp utility knife. You would repeat this process until your turf is cut into place.

We recommend installing our Newport Turf Rolls over crushed granite as this will help your turf to drain properly. We don't recommend using compacted pea gravel, but customers have used this with success. You would still want to follow the instructions that are provided on the Installation tab on this product page. Our turf is very resistant and has been installed all over the US and Canada. Our turf is freeze/thaw stable and can even handle the extreme heat of the US Southwest.

You can install our Newport Turf Rolls over cement. These turf rolls can be loose laid, taped, or glued to the cement. Our Newport Turf Rolls are not the best for use as a putting surface. The fibers on this product would impede the rolling of the ball greatly. For putting, we would recommend a low pile turf. All of the products that we recommend for putting can be found on our Putting Green Turf page.
