Installation Instructions for Rolled Turf Flooring
Outdoor Installation
Prepare the Area:
Clear the installation area by removing all grasses, sod, mulch, and other organic material.
If landscaping around trees, shrubs, or other obstacles, mark these areas and account for the turf edge configuration. Ensure enough space is left uncovered around tree bases.
Cap and Relocate Sprinklers:
Cap any unused sprinklers at the pipe level to prevent leakage.
Relocate sprinklers as needed, moving them at least 6-8 inches away from any hardscape or perimeter to avoid accidental damage during installation.
Prepare Electrical Components:
Move any electrical wiring or sprinklers away from the hardscape, securing them with U-shaped nails to the subgrade surface.
Install the Base:
Install a base layer of decomposed granite (DG) or a mixture of gravel and sand, which will allow liquids to drain properly.
For non-pet installations, the base should be about 3 inches deep. Distribute and level the base material evenly.
Wet the base to help it settle, then compact it thoroughly using a vibrating, tamping, or rolling tool until the surface is completely flat.
Install Weed Cloth (Optional):
If using weed cloth, roll it out over the base to prevent unwanted plant growth. Overlap the edges by 6 inches and secure with flat-head nails, trimming to fit the landscape area with a 1/4” gap along the border.
Lay the Turf:
Find a straight edge or two perpendicular edges to square the turf to the area, minimizing cutting and fitting.
Overcut the turf by about 1 inch around the edges for a proper fit, as this excess will be used for tucking.
Secure the turf edges temporarily with nails before securing the opposite sides.
Seam the Turf:
When seaming turf edges, use a seaming tool to cut in an S-shape, which helps avoid visible lines where the pieces join.
Install nails every 6 inches along the seams, driving them three-quarters of the way down to avoid dimples. Separate the grass blades from the nail head to keep the nails hidden.
For turf installed over a turf pad, use turf seam tape and adhesive to secure the seams.
Tuck the Turf:
Use a metal bar (such as a wonder bar) to tuck the turf edges against any hardscape or border for a clean, plush look.
Apply Infill:
Apply infill or sand evenly across the turf to help the blades stand upright and add weight. Brush the turf with a power brush or heavy bristled brush to work the infill into the base.
Brush the turf again to lift the blades and remove any excess debris, ensuring the surface is stable and well-settled.
Indoor Installation
Surface Preparation:
Ensure the installation surface is level, clean, and dry. Suitable surfaces include concrete, gypcrete, pressure-treated decking, wood, or backer board.
Dry Lay the Turf:
Dry lay the turf on the surface to plan the roll sequence and minimize variations. Check the back of the turf for manufacturing details to determine fiber direction.
Install Turf Pad (Optional):
If using a turf pad, install it over the base with double-sided tape or adhesive.
Apply Adhesive:
Apply adhesive or double-sided tape to the base, then lay the turf over it. Seal all seams with a bead of seam sealer to ensure a tight fit.
Roll the Turf:
Roll the entire turf surface with a 75 lb. weighted roller to secure it firmly to the adhesive.
Curing:
Allow the adhesive to cure for at least 72 hours, ensuring the installation remains in dry conditions during this period.
By following these steps, you can achieve a professional-quality installation of your Putting Green Turf, ensuring a durable and visually appealing finish.
Care and Maintenance Instructions for Putting Green Turf
Routine Care
Regular Cleaning:
Sweep the turf regularly to remove loose dirt, dust, leaves, and debris. Use a stiff-bristle broom or a power brush for the best results.
For outdoor installations, occasionally rinse the turf with water to wash away dirt and maintain a fresh appearance.
Stain Removal:
For minor spills or stains, blot the area with a clean cloth and rinse with water. Avoid using harsh chemicals as they can damage the turf fibers.
For more stubborn stains, a mixture of water and mild detergent can be used. Gently scrub the area with a soft brush, then rinse thoroughly with water.
Preventing Matting:
Regularly brush the turf fibers against the grain to keep them upright and prevent matting, especially in high-traffic areas.
If the turf fibers become flattened over time, use a power brush or a heavy-bristle brush to lift them back into place.
Infill Maintenance:
Check the infill level periodically. If it appears low, add more infill to maintain the turf's appearance and performance.
Spread the infill evenly across the turf surface and brush it in to ensure it settles properly at the base of the turf.
Weed Control:
For outdoor installations, inspect the turf regularly for any signs of weed growth, especially along the edges. Remove any weeds that may appear.
Seasonal Care
Winter Care:
In colder climates, the turf is frost-resistant and can withstand snow. However, avoid using metal shovels or ice-melting chemicals that could damage the turf.
Allow the snow to melt naturally or use a plastic shovel to remove snow gently.
Heat Management:
While the turf is heat-resistant, on extremely hot days, you may want to lightly spray the surface with water to cool it down, especially in high-traffic areas.
UV Protection:
The turf is UV stable, but prolonged exposure to intense sunlight can still cause slight fading over many years. Consider installing shade structures or awnings to reduce direct sun exposure if possible.
Long-Term Care
Inspect Seams and Edges:
Periodically inspect the seams and edges of the turf for any signs of lifting or separation. Reapply adhesive or secure with nails if necessary.
Turf Repair:
In the unlikely event that your turf sustains damage, small repairs can be made by patching with a matching piece of turf and securing with adhesive or seam tape.
Professional Maintenance:
For extensive installations or high-traffic areas, consider scheduling a professional turf maintenance service once a year to ensure the turf remains in optimal condition.
By following these care and maintenance guidelines, your Putting Green Turf will remain in excellent condition, providing a beautiful and functional surface for years to come.
