More Information

Our 7/8" Tatami Foam Mats offer an extra-thick interlocking foam tile to create a portable foam mat or a wall-to-wall surface designed for use in mixed martial arts training where shock absorption and impact protection is essential. These reversible textured foam floor tiles provide a unique martial arts mat surface meant to mimic Japanese tatami mats. Each Tatami Foam Tile is made of durable kid-safe, non-toxic EVA foam, which is waterproof, stain-resistant, easy to clean, and sanitize. EVA also acts as an excellent insulator against noise and temperature transmission.
*Added Bonus: 2 standard straight edge pieces are included with each tile so that any Tatami Mat Foam Tile may be used as an edge or corner to complete your martial arts flooring installation.

Material: Durable closed cell EVA foam.
Size: Two size options - 24" x 24" or 36" x 36" tiles.
Thickness: ~19mm.
Weight: 2' x 2' tiles weigh approximately 2.0 lbs each, 3' x 3' tiles weigh approximately 3.0 lbs each.

Recommended Uses: 7/8" Tatami Foam Mats are designed to provide a safe and shock absorbing training surface for a variety of mixed martial arts. Some ways these durable interlocking foam tiles have been used include: as grappling mats, martial arts mats, Judo mats, MMA mats, BJJ or Jiu Jitsu mats, Karate mats, Taekwondo mats, Goza mats, Aikido mats, and as general dojo mats.

Please note: Foam tile products can be punctured by sharp animal nails, rough use, high heels, and moving furniture. Waves in foam floor tiles may not line up if laid in the same direction. Removable corner can become a choking hazard.

Details

  • Temporary or Semi-Permanent, Interlocking
  • Durable closed cell EVA Foam
Installation of 7/8" Tatami Foam Tiles is very simple and typically done by the consumer. Tiles can be lain in the same direction or crisscross. 2 edge pieces are included with each tile. Typical installation of these easy-to-install interlocking tiles is as follows:
  • First, clean your sub floor so it is free of all dirt, grease or debris.
  • Start in one corner of the room with a corner tile and add border tiles outward along the adjacent walls. Add center, corner, and border tiles where you see fit.
  • When coming up to an opposite wall, make sure you cut the tiles to fit the area leaving a gap that’s roughly the thickness of the tiles being used to account for expansion and contraction of the floor tiles in varied temperature ranges.

Please Note: When piecing interlocking tiles together, adhesives are usually not used since the weight of the locked-together product is usually enough to keep the floor tiles from moving. However, if you do experience movement and would like to ensure that the tiles do not slide at all, some double-sided tape or mat tape can be used around the perimeter of the installation to prevent any movement.

  • 7/8" Tatami Foam Tiles are easy to clean and maintain. These shock absorbing interlocking foam tiles are constructed of durable closed cell EVA foam which means liquids cannot penetrate the surface of the tiles.
  • If the 7/8" Foam Tatami Tiles do get something spilled on them or appear dirty, all that is necessary to clean them is to do a quick wipe of the foam floor surface with a damp cloth and your Tatami Mats will look like new.

Our 7/8" Tatami Tiles are very safe and are Formamide and Phthalate free. They do not have a chemical smell, but there may be a slight odor similar to a new toy. You can mitigate this with a little soap and water. To get the testing results for our Tatami Tiles, please feel free to reach out to one of our Flooring Heroes via email, chat or phone.

Our Tatami tiles have been built to handle a lot of abuse and are very popular in martial arts studios and the like. There is no particular time frame as to how long these tiles will last, but they are in many commercial spaces and have been used for years with very little issue. And a nice thing about these tiles is that you can replace them with ease if one does become damaged.

Our 7/8" Tatami Tiles were designed with bare feet and socks in mind. These tiles will not tear up your feet and are great for jumping around and some aerobics. With some side-to-side movements, you may see some tile separation. To help alleviate that, we recommend placing some double sided tape under the tiles.

Even though our 7/8" Tatami Tiles are made from closed cell EVA, they can be installed outside in a child's play area. These tiles will not last as long as one of our rubber products in the elements, but they have been used for this purpose successfully. The main issues when these tiles are out in the elements on a daily basis are fading and tile degradation.

For our Tatami Tiles or any of our other foam tiles, there really isn't a way to make the tiles less slip. Usually what makes you slip is the sweat from your feet or your socks. The best solution to keep your grip on these tiles is to wear socks that have a grip bottom.

Our 7/8" Tatami Tiles are water-resistant, not waterproof. Since they are made of foam, when exposed to the elements over time, they will start to degrade in quality. You can use them outdoors as needed, but you may have to replace them sooner than later when exposed to the elements regularly.

You can install our Tatami Tiles have been used as an underpad under a hot tub. Since aesthetics are not essential for this application, the look of the tiles will not matter. The tiles are durable enough to withstand being under the hot tub and will be shielded from the elements to a certain extent allowing them to last longer in an outdoor setting. If a tile were to become too damaged, all you would need to do is just remove the tile and replace it.

The 2' x 2' and 3' x 3' tiles will not interlock together.

The 7/8" Tatami Tiles are a really thick foam flooring option and would be great for a daycare. Tables and chairs would leave dents in the foam if used for long periods of time and sharp objects such as heavy blocks could leave punctures in the surface with enough force. The advantage of an interlocking foam tile is that if a large tear occurs you can easily replace the tile, this keeps your floor safe without having to completely replace large sections because of minor damage.

The Tatami Tiles are great for practicing dynamic movement. They are soft on your feet and still textured enough to have grip for fast movement without being harsh on the skin.

Our Tatami tiles seem to cover marginally different square footage than you might think because of their interlocking sides, though the full tile size is 3' x 3' when measured. When tiles are interlocked you can see that they are somewhat overlapped, this causes the recommended quantities to increase in our calculator because it is trying to make sure you have enough tiles to be flush with whatever measurements you provide.
