• Q: How is Space Explorer carpet sold?

  A: It comes on a 12-foot-wide roll and is sold by the linear foot. The minimum cut is 5 linear feet. Every linear foot you order is 12 square feet of carpet. The pattern repeats every 36 inches in both directions. If your room needs more than one width, plan the seams and cut lengths so the pattern lines up.

• Q: Can this carpet be installed in a room that gets sunlight?

  A: Keep it out of direct sunlight. The fluorescent dyes that make this carpet glow are less sun-resistant than ordinary carpet dyes. Direct sun slowly fades the glow, even though the colors still look normal under regular light. The darker the room, the longer the fluorescence lasts. For that reason the manufacturer does not warrant colorfastness on this carpet, and fade resistance is covered for indoor use only.

• Q: How do I clean glow-in-the-dark carpet without ruining the glow?

  A: Vacuum often, and blot spills right away with a white absorbent cloth and clean water. Do not leave the carpet saturated. For a deep clean, use hot water extraction at 120F or less at the carpet face. Cleaner strength matters. Anything above pH 8, meaning an alkaline cleaner, quickly destroys the fluorescent effect. Wool-safe detergents and spot cleaners in the pH 4.5 to 6.5 range will not harm it. Avoid cleaners with optical brighteners, which glow under black light themselves.

• Q: How is Space Explorer carpet installed?

  A: Two ways: stretch-in over a pad, or glued down. Stretch-in seams are matched to the pattern and joined with hot-melt seam tape. The carpet is then stretched with a power stretcher or knee kicker, in 3 to 5 foot sections. For glue-down, use the trowel size and coverage printed on the adhesive pail. Seal every seam edge with seam sealer, then roll the floor with a 75 lb roller. Keep heavy traffic and furniture off it for 24 hours. Fill any cracks or holes in the subfloor before you start.

  A: Joy Carpets covers it with several warranties. Abrasive wear (10% fiber loss) and texture retention are covered for 20 years. Soil and stain protection and tuft bind are covered for 10 years. The antistatic treatment is covered for life. Fade resistance applies to indoor use only, and the fluorescent dyes are not covered for colorfastness.

That is one reason it turns up in arcades, bowling alleys, and theaters as well as home game rooms.
