Types of Rubber Flooring Rolls
Not all rubber roll flooring is the same. Depending on how you plan to use your gym, some flooring options will be better than others. Here’s the breakdown of what you need to look for in different gym settings.
Home Gym Rubber Rolls
Rubber rolls for home gym flooring don’t need to be as thick as commercial flooring, because they’re not going to get as much traffic.
If you need some durable, non-slip flooring for your light workouts and weightlifting at home, then these rubber rolls are for you.
Note: If you’re planning a serious weightlifting setup with Olympic weights, commercial-grade rubber rolls or rubber gym tiles are a better solution.
Commercial Gym Rubber Rolls
When it comes to commercial gym flooring, you need a rubber roll that is versatile enough for virtually any workout. Look for something that’s heavy-duty, like thick rubber roll matting, to handle a lot of traffic and intense exercise.
Consider if your commercial gym needs support for Olympic weightlifting, or high-impact rubber flooring for plyometrics, CrossFit, and more. That can help you narrow your options.
Rubber Rolls for Olympic Lifting
If you plan to regularly break out the barbells and weight plates for some serious heavy lifting, you need rubber roll flooring that is thick enough to absorb all that impact when you drop your weights. The last thing you want is to damage your subfloor while perfecting your power clean.
We recommend a rubber roll at least 1/2" thick for any weights over 100 Lbs.
Rubber Rolls for High Impact Workouts
High-impact workouts can hurt your joints if you don’t have the right flooring. Rubber rolls for high-impact workouts have a lower density than standard rubber flooring, which creates better cushioning for your knees.
These rubber rolls will support you through P90X, CrossFit, and more.
Rubber Flooring Thickness Options
One of the most important factors you need to consider is the thickness of your rubber floor.
Here’s a quick breakdown of our most popular thicknesses:
- 1/4” - Most popular for beginner home gyms.
- 8mm - Most popular home gym roll. Very durable rubber for commercial and home gyms. Made for basic home gyms, exercise rooms
- 3/8” - Most popular for commercial gyms and CrossFit. Same as 8mm, 1mm thicker.
- 1/2” - Ultra-thick commercial gym / CrossFit rubber roll. Ultra-durable rubber designed for extreme use.
Installation Options for Rubber Flooring Rolls
Rubber flooring rolls are easy to install, but they can be difficult to handle because they’re so heavy. You don’t necessarily need to hire an installer, but this also isn’t a DIY project you should complete on your own.
There are three options to install rubber flooring rolls:
- Loose lay
- Tape the perimeter
- Full glue down
Loose Lay Rubber Roll Installation
Loose laying rubber rolls doesn’t require glue or tape. Simply roll the flooring into place and you’re done. If you have a home gym and you’re just doing simple floor exercises, this is all you would need to keep your flooring in place.
Perimeter Tape Rubber Roll Installation
For some extra stability to keep your floor in place, use double-sided tape around the perimeter of their floor and along the seams. This installation process is very similar to loose lay, but you’ll also add tape around the edges. This is a good solution for home gym weight rooms where you’re doing floor work and some more intense workouts.
Glue Down Rubber Roll Installation
For the most permanent installation, you can fully glue your floor down. In this case, we recommend hiring a professional to make sure the floor is installed successfully.
With glue-down installation, your floor is certain to stay exactly where you put it, and it’s only really necessary in commercial gyms.
How to Clean Rubber Flooring
You need to know how to clean rubber gym flooring if you’re going to keep your gym sanitary.
The good news is that rubber tiles and flooring rolls are super durable and easy to clean, so it’s not that hard to take care of. It resists stains, mold, and mildew. It’s like half the work is already done for you! But there are still some important tips and tricks you should know.
- Sweep away any dirt and debris that might have accumulated.
- Spot clean any obvious areas that need some extra TLC. You can typically remove set-in stains by scrubbing vigorously with a soft-bristled brush.
- Mop the floor using a nylon, microfiber, or sponge mop. Be sure to avoid soaking the floor too much.
- Let the rubber flooring air dry after mopping, instead of wiping it down with a cloth or towel. This ensures a streak-free finish.
Rubber Gym Flooring Reviews
1/4" Tough Rubber Rolls
“I am extremely happy with my new purchase. Other than the smell of rubber, which has been fading over the past month, we absolutely love our rubber flooring. I feel as though my family has a legitimate gym in our garage!”
8mm Strong Rubber Rolls
“Love the 8mm rubber floor rolls. Upgraded our gym to a larger room in the house and decided to do it right and lay down gym flooring first. Really makes a difference, the cushion of carpet really affects stability. So glad we did this.”
1/2" Mega Rubber Rolls
“I did a lot of internet research on rubber flooring and decided to go with the 1/2″ Mega rubber rolls. The shipping was fast. The installation was easy with a tape measure, T-square, and a razor knife. The rubber smell was not too bad and had dissipated after about a week.
I have weight equipment on top of this rubber flooring and it doesn't even put a dent in it. The seams blend in when the rolls are placed side by side.”
