Types of Trailer Flooring
Tiles
Interlocking floor tiles are easy to install and offer the most customization in terms of looks. Made from either hard plastic or soft PVC, trailer floor tiles come in a variety of bold colors that you can mix and match and install in custom patterns.
Rolls
Rolled trailer flooring is simple to install: just roll it out, secure it to the subfloor with an adhesive, and enjoy your new floor. Flooring rolls can be made of either vinyl or rubber, and these materials have different properties and benefits.
Vinyl rolls can be more decorative and good for RVs and mobile homes, which is the case with sheet vinyl. Vinyl can also be ultra-durable and perfect for cargo and utility trailers. Rubber flooring rolls are durable, slip-resistant, and work great in livestock trailers, open trailers, and more.
Mats
Floor mats are typically made of rubber, and they don’t provide quite as much coverage as a full roll. Rubber mats are a good option if you just need some supplemental support for your floor, or you don’t necessarily need full coverage. However, you can always lay out multiple mats together and secure them with adhesive if desired.
Trailer Flooring Material
Vinyl Rolls
Vinyl rolls made from 100% premium grade polyvinyl (PVC) provide the ideal trailer flooring. Flexible, durable, and chemical resistant, soft PVC rolls can handle open trailers, race car towing, and more. This kind of vinyl roll is the same flooring you might use in a garage.
A vinyl sheet is another kind of vinyl roll. It offers more styles and patterns than the typical garage vinyl roll, and is more often used in RVs and mobile home trailers. Vinyl sheets have a softer backing for improved comfort underfoot, which is why it is also known as resilient flooring.
Soft PVC Tiles
Soft plastic tiles are made from the same PVC as the vinyl rolls, so these tiles are still flexible, durable, and chemical resistant. The advantage of tiles is that they’re more customizable. You can choose from more colors and create your own patterns, as opposed to having a solid color floor.
Tiles also allow you to replace a section of your flooring if part of it becomes damaged. All you need to do is pull up the affected tile and replace it with a new one. Soft PVC tiles also come in coin, diamond, textured and smooth patterns for different looks.
Hard Plastic Tiles
Hard plastic tiles are a great solution for car trailers because they’re stain-resistant, and won’t discolor even from race car tires. These tiles are just as easy to install as soft PVC tiles, and they offer even more color options. If you want a really flashy trailer, these tiles are for you.
One drawback to hard plastic flooring is the noise. These tiles are going to be louder than a floor made of soft PVC material. However, you can mitigate the sound by using a rubber underlayment.
Rubber Flooring
Rubber flooring is durable, which is a big plus for trailer flooring. It absorbs impact better than the other flooring options, which means your trailer is better protected when hauling heavy machinery or even livestock.
Rubber also holds up well against water and other messes, making it perfect for livestock trailers. It’s slip-resistant when wet, and to clean it, all you have to do is hose it down, mop with a mild soap and water solution if desired, and let it air-dry. Rubber is also comfortable and warm for animals, and the material allows them to gain good traction and footing.
Carpet
If you need comfortable flooring for mobile home trailers or RVs specifically, consider carpet tiles. Carpet tiles make for a stylish, cozy floor, and they’re easy to install and maintain. Many options feature a peel and stick backing, so installation is as simple as pulling off the backing and pressing the carpet to the floor.
Carpet tiles aren’t just about convenience and comfort either. For extra durability, choose carpet tiles that are commercially rated. Commercial carpet tiles can handle a ton of traffic, and are resistant to mold, mildew, staining, soiling, and wear. They come in various beautiful colors so you can find the perfect match for your mobile home or design a custom pattern.
Flooring by Trailer Type
Open Trailer
An open trailer is one of the harshest environments for flooring since it’s always exposed to the weather and UV radiation. For a floor that lasts, you need something weather-resistant that won’t fade or rot. Rubber and vinyl rolls are your best bet.
Race/Car Trailer
For trailers that haul vehicles like race cars, there are some specific features that will really help you out. Chemical resistance is important to prevent stains from any leaks or tire marks. Durability is also a big factor since cars are obviously pretty heavy. With those needs in mind, consider a floor that’s similar to garage flooring, like hard plastic tiles or soft PVC tiles.
Utility Trailer
Since utility trailers are used for a little bit of everything, from hauling vehicles to moving furniture, it’s a good idea to get a good multi-use floor. You never know what it might need to face – chemical spills, heavy machinery, and more. To cover all of your bases, a rubber or vinyl roll floor is recommended.
Cargo Trailer
A cargo trailer doesn’t necessarily need to be stylish. Instead, you might have other priorities, like easy loading and unloading, low-maintenance cleanup, and quietness underfoot. In that case, rubber flooring or soft PVC tiles could be a good fit for you.
Livestock Trailer
Hauling livestock poses a unique set of challenges because you need to consider the safety and comfort of your cargo. For thermal insulation, optimal traction, and slip-resistance, rubber flooring is the go-to solution. As a bonus, rubber flooring is super easy to clean.
RV Mobile Home Flooring
Flooring for your RV or mobile home should prioritize comfort and style. Since you’re spending a lot of time on this floor, you want it to look nice and feel soft underfoot. Easy cleanup is a big plus, too. To make your space feel more like home, consider sheet vinyl or carpet tiles.
Trailer Flooring Reviews
Diamond Nitro Rolls
“I purchased a 17’ x 5’ roll to install in my 10’ x 5’ enclosed trailer. I ride dirt bikes and have always wanted a more convenient place to haul them with. I installed it using the ‘tac’ spray. It installed very well and I had absolutely no problem. The floor looks great, has good traction when wet, and also it looks awesome!”
