On a 6' x 7', is the 6' the left side and 7' the right side?

For our 7' x 6' mats the 7' side would be the left side or Y side and the 6' would be the right side or the X side.
I have a sound issue. the 1st floor hears me walking around my 2nd floor kitchen. I'm thinking of something like this to deadened the sound would this work?

Yes, this product would certainly help with sound absorption from footsteps.
