I am putting these down as an area rug over prefinished hardwood. Will the adhesive damage the wood finish?

As a precaution you might prefer to float the carpet tiles using connecting tape that is not double sided.
I am putting these in an unfinished basement so my kids can play down there. Do these require padding underneath?

Yes, you can. In addition to being moisture resistant, a major benefit of these tiles is that they can be individually removed and cleaned or replaced in the event of any flooding or mold issues. To reduce and prevent moisture issues, we recommend making sure that a concrete subfloor is properly sealed or a moisture barrier is added prior to installing any flooring type.
