I am looking for a flooring I can install over carpet for a home gym. I had used horse stall mats before but it left marks on the carpet and had a strong plastic smell.

Our Rubber Gym tiles can be used over low to medium pile carpets, but high pile carpets can cause the tiles to separate. Light colored carpets do have the potential to be stained by our tiles due to them being black on the bottom. An easy solution to prevent staining is to place a thin plastic sheet underneath your tiles. Our rubber gym tiles do have a slight rubber smell to them, but this smell will dissipate over time.
Are border and corner tiles 2 x 2? I did not see any pics.

1/2" Rubber Gym Tile borders and corners are 2' x 2' for our 2' x 2' tiles and 4' x 4' for our 4' x 4' tiles.
I just installed the flooring in a music studio, which is total enclosed. There is a VERY strong rubber smell. Will it go away, and if so, how long will it take? Is there anything I can do to help get rid of it? It's really bad, don't want to be in the room.

The smell associated with our 1/2" Rubber Gym Tiles will dissipate over time. The best way to speed this process up is to mop the floor with a mild soap and water solution. We then recommend to let the flooring air dry in a well ventilated space. This process may have to be done a few times to truly get rid of the smell, but this is the best way to remove the rubber smell.
Will two, 2' x 2' tiles interlock with one, 4' x 4' tile?

Two 2' x 2' tiles will not interlock with one 4' x 4' tile.
How forgiving are these mats? My wife and I do a lot of DVD workouts and weight lifting (dumbbells and kettlebells) so I am looking for something for our home gym to handle the occasional drop of a dumbbell, yet be soft enough on the feet/knees for jumping around type workouts.

Our 1/2" Rubber Gym Tiles are durable enough to drop weights on them and would give you ample shock absorbency for high impact workouts. Working out on these tiles will be easier on your knees than working out on concrete.
We received a 1/2 " tile sample - one side has a slight waffle weave texture, and the other is smooth. Can we install with the smooth side up?

The top of the tiles is the textured side, but you can install the tiles with the smooth surface on top.
Where are the 1/2" rubber gym interlocking tiles made? Are they made in the USA?

What is the best way to cut the 1/2" tile? I want to make a nice fit around the walls in the room.

The best way to cut our 1/2" Rubber Gym Tiles is a sharp utility knife and a straight edge. Multiple scores with the knife a typically necessary, but this is the best way to cut the tiles and keep a nice clean look. You can use a jigsaw on low speed with silicone or water, and this too can effectively cut the tiles with ease.
What is the difference between a corner tile and border tile? I have a 15 x 9 foot space with 3 walls. I want a beveled edge on the open space border, but a straight edge is fine against the walls.

A corner tile is a tile that has two straight edges and a border tile only has on straight edge. Corner tiles are usually used at the corner of a room or the corner of the floor. Border tiles are used on the edge of the room or floor.
I am planning to redo my garage floor, and we like to use it as a gym and, on occasion, to bring the cars in. would the rubber floor stand the weight of the cars, or we need a 1" floor?

A car can easily drive over our 1/2" Rubber Gym Tiles. These rubber tiles are our toughest tiles and will not indent under the weight of the car. These tiles are vulcanized like the tires on your car. The only problem that may arise from parking a car over our rubber flooring is that if any oil gets on the tile from the car, over time, the tiles may start to break down. For most cars, oil leakage if pretty rare, so this is not an issue for most installations.
We are looking to install rubber flooring in our fitness room. We currently have a tile floor over concrete. Do we have to remove the tile, or can we install the rubber flooring directly over the existing tile floor?

You can install our 1/2" Rubber Gym Tiles over tile without having to remove it.
Are there any soft foam interlocking tiles which have the same interlocking pattern as these, such that I could build a floor that was an interconnected mosaic of both types (four of the 2'x2' foam tiles for every one of the 4'4' rubber tiles...)? Thanks!

Unfortunately, we do not have any rubber tiles that interlock with our foam tiles.
My son is looking to do some short sprint training in our basement, he wanted artificial turf, but these tiles seem to me to be a better option, what do you think?

Both our Rubber Gym Tiles and our turf would be great options for doing sprint training in our basement. Typically sprint training is done on a rubber track, so using our rubber gym tiles would provide the most realistic training surface. Another reason why the rubber tiles would be a better option is the fact that they will help absorb the shock of someone applying that much force while running. This will help protect their joints while training. Another great option for this type of training would be our rubber rolls.
Are these tiles able to sustain martial arts training? Our students wear shoes and shuffle back and forth while practicing/sparring/etc.
Our 1/2" Rubber Gym Tiles are very durable and would be able to withstand students shuffling back and forth with shoes on the flooring without damaging it. These tiles won't have the most shock absorbency, so these tiles wouldn't be our first choice for martial arts training, but it can be used for this. We do have a wide range of martial arts flooring that would be perfect for this and would be just as durable. These products can be found on our martial arts flooring page.
What is meant by beveled edges?

Our beveled edge on our 1/2" Rubber Gym Tiles is more like a true bevel than a ramp. Pretty much you will get a slight taper at the top of the tile.
Would this work on hardwood floors? Any concern for moisture between the mat and hardwoods?

You can install our Rubber Gym Tiles over hardwood floors. If you have any concerns about installing the rubber over hardwood, we recommend placing a plastic sheet under the tiles to protect your floors. Moisture would not be an issue unless you already currently had a moisture issue. We would recommend taking care of that issue first as the moisture will damage your hardwood flooring.
Can this be installed over vinyl plank?

You can install our Rubber Gym Tiles over certain types of vinyl. If the vinyl you are installing over is a luxury vinyl, then you can install it over that. Since these products have a wear layer on them, it protects the vinyl from reacting with the tiles. If the product is a natural vinyl product like some vinyl sheets, then we would recommend you not installing it over it as the rubber will stain the vinyl over time. If you don't mind that, then you can install our rubber flooring over any vinyl floor.
Can these tiles be used outdoors? Will they hold up in hot and cold weather and sunshine? They are for the floor of a polyethylene telescope building.

Our 1/2" Rubber Gym Tiles can be installed outdoors. These tiles are very durable and will be able to withstand the elements. They are freeze/thaw stable and are mold and mildew resistant. These tiles are very slip-resistant and are more slip-resistant when wet. The only thing that you will notice when placing our rubber flooring outside is that it can fade in direct sunlight over time.
What does beveled tile mean?

A bevel is a slope that can be found on flooring. On our 1/2" Rubber Gym Tiles, this bevel is a full bevel taking the edge of your flooring from 1/2" to the flooring surface.
What is the difference between border and center tiles?

Border tiles have interlocking sides on three sides, whereas a center tile has interlocking sides on all sides.
Part of my subfloor is 1/8" higher up (elevated) vs. the rest. Would I be able to put 3/8" tiles over that section and 1/2" tiles elsewhere? Would the two thicknesses interlock?

In theory, this could work. Our 3/8" Rubber Gym Tiles and our 1/2" Rubber Gym Tiles will interlock with each other as the only difference between the two is the thickness.
I would like to install it in my family room, which has a concrete floor, but the floor is not smooth. We have ridges in one area due to tile that was removed and indents where patches of concrete came up with carpet strip removal. Both the ridges and indents are 1/8 of an inch or less high/deep. Do we have to smooth the floor before installing this 1/2" rubber tile?

You can install our 1/2" Rubber Gym Tiles over a floor that is not perfectly smooth. Since these tiles are vulcanized, they are more rigid than our standard rubber tiles. Also, these tiles come in a very large 4' x 4' format that will be able to easily go over many of the imperfections found on your floor.
Will the 1/2" rubber tiles stain ceramic tile underneath?
Our 1/2" Rubber Gym Tiles will not stain porcelain, ceramic, or natural stone tile.
I am looking for mat-flooring for a high school weight room. Is 1/2" thickness thick enough?

Our 1/2" Rubber Gym Tiles have been used in high school and college weight rooms with great success. Our 1/2" Rubber Gym Tiles are our best flooring for Olympic lifting, which is common in school gyms. The tiles are very durable and shock absorbent. Being non-porous, these tiles are very easy to clean and disinfect, which is a must when being used in public gyms.
Does the beveled edge eliminate the interlocking tabs and come with straight edges?

The beveled edge does not get rid of the interlocking tabs in our Rubber Gym Tiles. The tiles will be interlocking with the corner and border tiles coming beveled on the edge to eliminate a tripping hazard.
Are vulcanized tiles less shock absorbant than non-vulcanized? Are vulcanized tiles good for high impact plyometric training?
Vulcanized tiles like our 1/2" Rubber Gym Tiles are less forgiving than non-vulcanized tiles. Both types of rubber are shock absorbent, but the non-vulcanized tiles would be more cushioned to help lessen the impact placed on your body when doing jump exercises or high impact plyometric exercises. For these types of exercises, we recommend going with one of our Impact Rolls or Mats which can be found on our High Impact list page.
Should I put anything between the laminate and the rubber floor to prevent any damage to the laminate?

You don't have to place anything between our 1/2" Rubber Gym Tiles when installing them over laminate flooring. If you are concerned about any staining, you can place a plastic sheet between the rubber tiles and laminate.
What does a beveled 2'x2' tile look like? Are the bevels on all sides for corner, border, and center tiles?
The bevels on our 1/2" Rubber Gym Tiles and all of our Rubber Gym Tiles are only on the border and corner tiles. The corner tile will have two sides that would be beveled whereas a border tile would only have one side that is beveled.
Do the 1/2' Rubber Gym Tiles interlock? One of the images shows that they do, but another does not. Do you all sell corner or border tiles in this style?

Our 1/2" Rubber Gym Tiles are an interlocking tile. These tiles are made in three different forms, corner, border, and center tiles. The center tiles have interlocks on all sides. The border tiles have interlocks on three sides, and the corner tiles have interlocks on two sides. You can purchase all three types individually on the product page.
Just got in my 4' x 4' black tiles. Which side is the top? The rough or slick?

The top side of our 1/2" Rubber Gym Tiles is the textured or rough side. The smooth side is the bottom.
Hi- A couple of questions:
1) If I cut the locking tabs off a tile of the 1/2 Rubber Gym 4' Tiles, will that straight edge line up with the edge of a border tile when attached side by side?
2) Also, when a border tile that is side by side with a beveled edge tile, does the beveled edge start at the edge of the border tile and stick beyond the border tile OR does the beveled edge end (0 degrees) at the same edge of the border tile?

If you cut the tabs off our 1/2" Rubber Gym Tiles, the straight edge of that tile will not line up with the straight edge of a border tile. The border tile is made to be the same size as a center tile with the teeth on all sides. If a tile has a beveled edge, the bevel will start before the edge and then end up being the same size as a border tile that had a straight edge.
Will these rubber tiles hold up to weight sleds? I'm curious if the sled will get caught where the tiles interlock.
Since our 1/2" Rubber Gym Tiles and pretty much all rubber flooring has a high coefficient of friction, typical sleds don't typically work on them. If you wanted to use a sled over our rubber flooring, you would have to find one specifically made to work over rubber. There are a few out there that are essentially vinyl/plastic sacs that you lay flat and add weight into them.
Would you consider this a low VOC (volatile organic compounds) rubber tile? Also, what kind of rubber does this use?

Our 1/2" Rubber Gym Tiles wouldn't be considered low VOC. A smell mitigant is used in these rubber tiles to keep the smell down, but there is still a rubber smell. This rubber smell can be mitigated by mopping the floor with a mild soap and water solution with a synthetic mophead. You also will want to make sure there is plenty of ventilation in the space where you are installing our Rubber Gym Tiles, and you may need to repeat the mopping part a few times to get the smell truly mitigated. Our Rubber Gym Tiles are vulcanized rubber tiles that are made from the treads of commercial truck tires.
Will these tiles reduce the vibration and sound of my elliptical so my downstairs neighbor cannot hear?

Our 1/2" Rubber Gym Tiles will help to reduce the amount of vibration that comes from your elliptical. We can't guarantee your downstairs neighbor will not hear it, but the amount of noise will be greatly reduced.
Do the beveled edge strips taper down from floor thickness?
Yes, the beveled edge strips taper down from the floor thickness to about 1/8" thick.
