Is adhesive necessary to install these tiles? They say interlocking but the instructions for installation seem to include adhesive steps.

We recommend using adhesive under the interlocking tiles since it helps to keep the tiles from being stolen and keeps the tiles from buckling. However, using an adhesive is optional, you may skip using the adhesive and go for a glue-free installation by simply interlocking the tiles.
