This is where things can get tricky. The cost of installing vinyl flooring really depends on a number of factors: what type of vinyl flooring you’re installing, where you live, and the amount of labor you’ll need.

Of course, installation cost often includes the cost of disposing of your old flooring in addition to the cost of labor. Basically, there’s a lot of factors that can influence the installation cost numbers.

However, for the sake of simplicity, I’ve researched the average cost of installing vinyl flooring by type, and included the labor cost estimations.

The cost to install vinyl plank flooring and vinyl tile flooring will be the same, as they are ultimately the same style of installation. However, I do want to add that both vinyl plank flooring and vinyl tile flooring can be easily installed yourself. I’ll talk about that a little later.

What Affects Vinyl Flooring Cost?

There are several factors that go into pricing vinyl flooring. For example, some vinyl flooring has a special feature, such as being waterproof or having a rigid core. Vinyl flooring cost will also vary by the thickness of the wear layer and the thickness of the plank or tile.

To give you a little more information on how vinyl flooring is priced, let’s take a look at three important factors.

Vinyl Flooring Type:

Vinyl planks and tiles will be priced different than vinyl sheet flooring. Vinyl sheet flooring is often the most inexpensive form of vinyl.

If you’re shopping for vinyl sheet flooring, you can probably expect your price point to be lower. When comparing the prices of vinyl planks and vinyl tiles, you’ll find these prices fairly comparable.

Vinyl Flooring Wear Layers:

The wear layer is also a factor in vinyl flooring cost. Typically, the thicker the wear layer, the more expensive the vinyl flooring will be. This isn’t necessarily a rule of thumb, as price also varies by brand, but for the most part a thicker wear layer equals a more expensive vinyl plank or tile.

Vinyl Flooring Features:

Some vinyl planks and tiles come with a few extra luxury features. Apart from the standard luxury vinyl flooring, there’s also WPC Vinyl Flooring and SPC Rigid Core luxury vinyl flooring.

Both WPC Vinyl and SPC Rigid Core vinyl are completely waterproof. As in 100% waterproof.

WPC Vinyl has a wood plastic composite core and SPC Rigid Core vinyl has a stone plastic composite core. What exactly does this mean? It means that WPC Vinyl is resilient and waterproof and SPC Vinyl is stiffer, sturdier and also waterproof.

You’ll find that that SPC Rigid Core vinyl has a higher price point. That’s because the rigid core makes it a bit more durable than WPC Vinyl.

Additional Vinyl Flooring Installation Costs:

To help you get the best vinyl flooring cost estimate, I also want to mention some additional cost factors you may not have thought of.

  • Molding: To keep your flooring looking sharp, you might need to replace or add molding to the room. Depending on the size of the room, and the type of molding you need, the cost can add up.
  • Underlayment: Most luxury vinyl has an attached underlayment, but if not, you may need to purchase an underlayment of vapor barrier for your flooring.
  • Flooring Removal: If you have another flooring, there will probably be a disposal fee.

Does my vinyl flooring need an underlayment?

A) Most vinyl planks and tiles have an attached underlayment and do not need any additional padding. If it does not, we do recommend an underlayment.

Vinyl sheet may be installed over an underlayment if the subfloor is uneven. However, over time, the vinyl sheet will acquire the texture of the subfloor. For more info, I suggest you read our Underlayment Buying Guide!

Can I install vinyl flooring myself?

A) Vinyl plank flooring and vinyl tile flooring is very DIY friendly and can easily be installed yourself! If you are installing vinyl sheet flooring, we suggest you leave it to a professional.

Should I buy vinyl planks or vinyl sheets?

A) It depends on a number of factors including your budget, the space, and more. If you’re wanting a realistic wood-look flooring, vinyl planks are your best bet. If you are looking for a cheap flooring, then vinyl sheets are really affordable.

A) Yes, you can!
