Rubber Flooring: Tiles Vs. Rolls

Rubber Flooring: Tiles Vs. Rolls

How do you decide between tiles and rolls for your flooring? Getting down to the details to help you make the best choice in the ever popular debate on rubber flooring — tiles vs. rolls.

Okay, so you’re ready to build your dream gym. Maybe it’s in an effort to meet your goal of getting fit, or maybe you’re an avid exerciser looking for a way to bring fitness into your home, or perhaps you are replacing/updating the floors in your commercial gym. Whatever boat you’re in, you’re going to need to make the decision: do you purchase tiles or rolls?

Rubber tiles are known for their ease and simplicity. Clicking in together like puzzle pieces, they are truly one of the easiest flooring options on the market. It is a job anyone, and I mean anyone can do, and the tiles look great! You can also add some flair and design with different colors if that’s your jam, or keep it simple. Rubber tiles are super popular for the home gym largely due to their approachability. They’re like the twist top wine of floors, if you will.

Pros

  • Easy installation
  • Easy to cut to fit the shape of your room
  • No glue or tape necessary!
  • Easy to store

Cons

  • Typically more expensive than mats
  • Installation, while simple, can be time consuming in large spaces

Rubber Rolls

Rubber flooring rolls are awesome for covering a large space. I mean, think about it — can you imagine interlocking each individual tile together over the space of a huge commercial gym? It can totally be done, but that’s not exactly a party I’d want to go to. While rubber tiles are often considered to be the easier option, I would actually say that for a large space, rubber rolls offer the easier install.

Pros

  • Great for large spaces
  • Cost efficient
  • Custom cut rolls allow you to purchase just the amount you need
  • Requires less cutting than tiles, especially custom cut rolls

Cons

  • Very heavy — may need additional help installing
  • Installation is a larger process than with tiles

The real deal

If you want something easy for a small space, you should choose tiles. If you’re looking for something more permanent to cover a large space, you should choose rolls. Simple as that.

    • Hi Mabel,

Can you please tell me which product you’re referring to? I’d be happy to get you started with more info and a quote 🙂

  2. I want to sell and install these products at a customers house. Actually several customers. Who do I speak to in order to move this along?

    • Hi Bryan,

One of our sales reps will be in touch with you shortly.

  3. Would these rubber tiles work well to lay over an old cement patio that is damaged? There are large cracks and other voids. Could we fill the problem areas with sand to level out and then cover with the tiles? Would the tiles withstand northern winter weather?

    • Hello Viki, thank you for your question. Rubber tiles are great for outdoor patio flooring and will work well over old cement flooring. Rubber is also known for withstanding harsh winter weathers, looking as good as new after the season. You can read more about using rubber flooring outdoors in our post on Outdoor Flooring Options.

Good luck with your project, and please let us know if we can help.

  4. Can this rubber floor be used in a commercial kitchen? Restaurant.

    • Hello, Bill. Thanks for your question! Our rubber flooring has been used in commercial kitchens. I would recommend rubber rolls over rubber tiles in this area, because they will be easier to seal. Whichever you choose will work great in a restaurant setting.

  5. In a 350 sq ft basement do you recommend rolls or tiles? The floor is mostly rectangular.

    • Hi, Robert! Thanks for your question. Your best bet would be rubber rolls, because they will be easier for you to seal. Tiles will work just as well, but it’s a little more work.

        • Hi Jeff! Could you please let me know what product you’re referring to? Once I get more specifics I’ll be happy to help.

  6. I want to make a space in my basement for my 1-year-old. So I’d also like to add some sort of matted walls. This will be an approximately 22′ x 12′ area, though I may decide to do a larger, L-shaped area. Thoughts on walls?

  7. What would you suggest for a home gym that’s approx 1,000. sq ft (~44 x 23.5)? Can’t decide between tiles and rolls!

    • Hi Daryl,

      Thank you for reaching out.

Both rubber tiles and rolls are easy to install and remove at your convenience. Based on the size of the space you’re working with, I would suggest rubber tiles since they weigh less. This will make your flooring easy to maneuver if necessary.

I hope this helps with your project. Please reach out if you have any other questions.
