Carpet Floor Pros and Cons

What are the advantages?
  • Comfort: Nothing can make a room comfy and cozy like carpet rolls. In addition to the options for plush fibers and added padding, it offers more warmth than tile or vinyl.
  • Style: So many patterns, designs, and colors can be applied to carpet rolls and tiles. That means you can find a product in whatever style you prefer.
  • Eco-friendly: Many carpet tiles are now manufactured sustainably out of materials like plastic bottles and fishing nets.
  • Carpet tile installation: Installing tiles is incredibly easy. For many tiles, you simply have to peel off the backing to reveal pre-applied adhesive, then stick the tile to the floor.
What are the drawbacks?
  • Maintenance: While some carpets come with stain protection, there’s still the potential for an accidental spill to leave an unsightly spot on your floor.
  • Broadloom installation: Rolled carpet can be harder to install than tiles, because they need to be stretched out and fastened down. Professional installation is recommended.

tiles and planks

Tiles/Planks

Carpet tiles are one of our most popular flooring solution products. They are available in many styles and colors and are typically easier to install and maintain when compared to other flooring types such as broadloom. There’s also a new variation of a tile - a plank! You get all the benefits, but in a fun new plank shape, so you have more design opportunities.

Installing peel and stick tiles takes two steps: peel, then stick! Some tiles require double sided tape, but that only adds one more step. Easy peasy - no professional installation is needed!

An added bonus to choosing a tile over broadloom is that they are easy to replace. If one were to become damaged, you can easily pull it up and replace it.

Rolls/Broadloom

Rolls/Broadloom

While carpet tiles are a quickly growing flooring option, traditional broadloom still takes the cake for the majority of the flooring industry. Do you know the concept of “buy more, save more”? Broadloom rolls follow that same idea, and rolls are typically priced cheaper per square foot than other floor types since they will cover a larger area.

This makes broadloom a great choice for budget-friendly projects as well as large jobs where a high amount of square footage needs to be covered. We shouldn’t forget to mention how comfortable the traditional carpeting is underfoot - these thicker and often plush rolls can be the perfect relaxation for your tired feet.

Rugs

Rugs

An area rug combines the easy installation of carpet tiles with the comfort of broadloom rolls. They come in a variety of beautiful colors, designs, and textures, making them the perfect accent piece for your room.

Area rugs add to the functionality of your space. If you love the easy maintenance of tile, but still want to avoid constantly cold floors, an area rug designates a warm, comfortable hangout spot that doesn’t require the cleaning effort of wall-to-wall carpet. Plus, some rugs are designed for outdoor use, so you can spruce up your porch or patio. Just lay out your rug and enjoy!

Carpet Floor Applications

High Traffic/Commercial

High Traffic/Commercial

Commercial settings like stores, lobbies, and business obviously have a ton of foot traffic. If you want to cover the floor in a heavy traffic area, you need something that won’t get matted down or worn-looking after only a few months of use.

That’s where high traffic carpet comes in! This is a low-pile, durable option that won’t stain easily. Many businesses will use commercial carpet tiles, because if one gets stained or destroyed, it’s easy to pull it up and replace it without having to spend the time and money on replacing the entire floor.

Low Traffic/Residential

Low Traffic/Residential

As the name might suggest, residential carpet is designed to excel in your home, where there’s not going to be really heavy foot traffic. While still durable, low traffic flooring can focus more on being comfortable or budget friendly, and not just indestructible.

With low traffic carpet, you’ll often find thicker pile heights, which means a plush floor. Some options come with other features to make home life easier, including stain resistance, hypoallergenic construction, and even waterproof technology.

Outdoor

Outdoor

Outdoor carpet is built to withstand the elements while still remaining visually appealing and hygienic. For those reasons, this kind of flooring needs to be UV stable, as well as resistant to mold, mildew, stains, and moisture.

For outdoor patios and deck areas, we recommend choosing a polyester fiber carpet. Polyester is durable enough to stand up to all of the harsh things that weather may have in store, and will not fade in direct sunlight.

Fiber Types

Nylon

Nylon

This is the most common as well as versatile fiber in the world of carpet. It’s ideal for indoor installations, and is a popular choice inside commercial buildings, condos and apartments. Nylon is often chosen for its safety with indoor applications because it meets fire codes since it doesn’t burn - it melts.

Additionally, nylon is resistant to mold, mildew and staining, and is also less absorbent than other fibers. However, if you’re looking for outdoor carpet, you should look at other fibers. This is because nylon fades very easily in the sun, so it’s not designed for outdoor applications.

Polyester

Polyester

Polyester or “PET” is quite durable and is typically a lower cost than nylon. This thread has started to become the standard fiber used in many carpets and is used in both indoor and outdoor applications. This fiber is very durable and resistant to water as well as staining, which makes it great for any use in the home and even in commercial spaces.

Another added benefit of this fiber is it’s high color retention and consistency. What this means for you is that when you have several solid-colored tiles of the same color next to each other, they will all look the same. There won’t be noticeable color variation. This can’t be said for other fibers.

Polypropylene

Polypropylene

These fibers are cheaper than others, but they still hold up very well in high traffic areas. You can find polypropylene fiber in places like grocery stores or office lobbies. This kind of fiber is easily stained, especially by oil, but it does offer benefits in the form of fade- and mildew-resistance.

Carpet Flooring Trends

Patterns

  • Geometric: Shapes are very popular right now in tile and paint, so it’s no surprise that carpet is following suit. You can find it with square patterns, stripes, hexagons, and more!
  • Floral: Floral patterns offer elegance and a classic aesthetic. Some floral carpets will have bold color, but one growing trend is to have an intricate floral pattern in muted, neutral colors.
  • Themed: Themed carpet is designed to complement a space and designate its purpose. For example, a home theater could have themed flooring with popcorn and movie reels, or casino flooring could have a pattern with playing cards. It’s extra fun and creative.
  • Solid Color: While lots of people are looking to introduce more patterns into their styles, sometimes the best thing you can do is go back to the basics. Solid colors have always been popular, and it’s certain to stay that way, because simplicity goes with any style.
  • Decorative: What is a decorative pattern, exactly? Typically, these patterns are detailed and abstract. The style can range from really wild (the kind of stuff you might find in a bowling alley or home theater), to more elegant and classic.

Colors

  • Grays: The gray trend is everywhere in interior design, from walls, to cabinets, and even carpet. Gray is a cool-toned neutral that goes with virtually every style.
  • Blues: Another cool tone, blue is trendy because it adds color without being overwhelming. Deeper, darker blues are especially popular right now.
  • Multi-color: Sometimes, you have to go big and bold with color, and that’s where multi-color carpet comes in. Colorful carpet can feature abstract, artsy designs, or it might be as simple as mixing and matching colorful tiles. It all depends on what you want.
  • Neutrals: Soft browns and beiges have always been a classic for carpet, and they’ll never truly go out of style. These true neutrals bring warmth and hominess to any space.
