This flooring underlayment can be installed at grade or above grade and a vapor barrier may be needed if specified by a manufacturers’ warranty. Rubber Underlayment

  • Why rubber underlayment?

Rubber underlayment offers superior sound resistance, is versatile and resilient. Comprised of recycled materials, this environmentally friendly product provides cushion underfoot as well as reducing sound transmission and impact sound such as footsteps. Amazingly, a 2mm thick rubber underlayment has similar testing numbers in sound resistance as compared to a 6mm thick cork underlayment.

Do I REALLY need underlay?

  • Yes, most definitely.

Underlayment is an amazing invention created by the flooring gods out of necessity. Underlay has an impressive list of benefits, including: adding warmth to your floors so your feet aren’t so cold on new tile flooring, adding comfort and a slight ‘give’ underneath wood or vinyl floors, reduced sound transmission (great for houses with noisy teenagers!), as well as reducing in room step noise. The image to the left is a very simplified example of using underlayment versus not using it, but as you can see the benefits greatly outweigh any reason not to.

Making your house a home

  • Products that work together

A favorite for use with hard plastic garage tiles, hardwood flooring and stone floor tiles. Rubber underlayment should never be used with vinyl flooring, VCT, or linoleum flooring as it could potentially stain these materials.

Thickness

  • What does it mean?

Underlayment with a thickness of up to 5mm thick are great when it comes to residential or commercial use, with all flooring types. When you get to more than 5mm thick, these are really great for installations where you need to add thickness to match up with an adjoining/existing floor surface.

IIC / STC Ratings

  • What do they mean?

IIC stands for Impact Insulation Class, which refers to impact sounds such as shoes hitting the ground, dropping a cell phone, or other scenarios where something it dropped or impacts the floor. STC stands for Sound Transmission Class, which refers to any audible noise (not an impact) such as music playing aloud, a conversation, or a loud television, for example. With both of these ratings systems, the higher the number rating is for the underlayment, the better it will suppress sound, and the quieter a room will be. You may want to pay close attention to these ratings when shopping for underlayment if sound reduction is important to you.

Don't see what you're looking for?
While looking at the 6 and 12 mm rubber underlayment, it's recommended for sound suppression, would the regular pre-cut rubber rolls or the heavy duty rubber rolls (I was thinking 3/8") also help with sound? I am on a second floor condo and would like to install this under carpet to block sound from below and not have my footsteps or running around bother the 1st floor neighbors. Thanks, love the site!

Our rubber rolls do help to reduce sound from traveling from floor to floor, but our rubber underlayments are specially designed and tested for noise reduction. The underlayments are recommended for this use. Glad you love our site. We love it too!
Would the 1/2" product be appropriate to use as an underlayment for luxury vinyl planks (e.g., Cortec)? The underlayment would be on top of concrete. I'm looking to get a little R-value to have a thermal break from the cold slab on grade.
Gary
Our 12mm Pre-Cut Rubber Underlayment will work perfectly under luxury vinyl planks and tiles. Our rubber typically has an R-Value of 1.100. This will give help to provide some insulation from your cold subfloor.
Can this be used under carpet?
Chip
Yes, rubber underlayment can be used underneath carpet.
What is the density of this rubber for carpet purposes? The guides I have read suggested 19-22lb density for slab rubber under carpets.
Tarun Nagpal
The density is 47 lbs per cubic ft.
is this rubber underlay suitable to be used in an outdoor (frequent rain exposure) location glued down, to a painted wood surface, with outdoor carpet tiles glued on top of the rubber underlay?
Anonymous
Our rubber underlayment has not been tested for use in outdoor applications.
Can this be used under carpet tile? if not what is the most suitable underlayment?
Neo
Rubber underlayment is suitable for use underneath carpet tiles.
Would this be appropriate to use as the primary floor in a gym?
We would not recommend using our 12mm Pre-Cut Rubber Underlayment as a primary floor in a gym environment.

To whom it may concern, I would like to highly commend Kanar for the excellent customer service that she provided. It was key to my purchase. Kanar answered my technical questions this past Saturday to the best of her ability and sent me the relevant technical data that I requested. She stayed on the phone to make sure I received the datasheet and was satisfied. After further questions, Kanar informed me that she would look to provide the specific technical information that I was asking for on Monday. When Monday came around, Kanar followed up right away with the information. I though she would be annoyed by my barrage of questions but Kanar was very patient, courteous and reassuring. During this experience, I did not feel pressure to place an order or any sense of displeasure because of my many questions. Kanar's support and the product information that she provided positively influenced my decision to purchase the rubber flooring product. Definitely A1 customer service! Regards, Paul
